Declaration of the Prime Minister of the time of Raoul Wallenberg | Aici

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, issued the following statement on Raoul Wallenberg’s day:

“Today, we honor Raoul Wallenberg, a hero and extraordinary person who gave his life to save the Jews of German-occupied Hungary from persecution, deportation to concentration camps and death during the Holocaust.

“Mr. Wallenberg was named ‘the greatest humanitarian of the 20th century’ by the United Nations and was named Canada’s first honorary citizen in 1985. A Swedish diplomat and businessman, he saved the the lives of tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews in just six months, between July 1944 and January 1945, by granting them diplomatic passports granting them immunity. He also established a network of safe havens operating under Swedish diplomatic protection to shelter and protect those fleeing persecution from the Nazi regime. Tragically, he disappeared in 1945 when he was captured by the Soviets and sent to a labor camp. In 2001, the Government of Canada designated January 17, the date of his disappearance, as Raoul Wallenberg Day.

“Mr. Wallenberg’s legacy is celebrated around the world and is a powerful reminder of the change one person can make when they choose to face evil and take action. His selflessness and courage is reflected in his famous quote: ‘There is no other choice for me.

“As a nation, Canada has been profoundly shaped by the significant contributions of the approximately 40,000 Holocaust survivors who settled here after the war. Today, and every day, Canadians remember the Holocaust, honor the victims, and remember the survivors.

“Today, with anti-Semitism on the rise at home and around the world, we must maintain our commitment to stand against all forms of hatred and discrimination. Each of us, Jewish or non-Jewish, has a constant duty to speak out against anti-Semitism whenever and wherever it occurs. All Canadians have an ongoing role to play in ensuring that basic respect and inclusion are at the heart of our strong community.

“On Raoul Wallenberg Day, I encourage all Canadians to reflect on Mr. Wallenberg’s story and draw inspiration from his courage, humanity and commitment to justice. The Government of Canada will continue to stand up against antisemitism as we build an equal, safe and just world for all. “
