Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos express interest in buying Man Utd | Aici

LONDON – British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos has officially joined the race to buy Manchester United.

United’s owners, the Glazer family, said they were ready to listen to offers from the Premier League club in November and wanted Ratcliffe to do a deal.

Boyhood United fan Ratcliffe, who made an unsuccessful £4.25 billion ($5.2 billion) bid to buy Chelsea last year, has long been linked with the Old Trafford outfit.

“We have put ourselves on the line officially,” an Ineos spokesman told the BBC.

After Roman Abramovich failed to take over Chelsea when Roman Abramovich sold the Blues to Todd Boehly and his consortium, Ratcliffe returned in pursuit of a Premier League title.

United have yet to comment on reports of the 70-year-old’s interest in taking up a role with the Glazers in the United States.

But, born in Failsworth, Greater Manchester, Ratcliffe is one of Britain’s richest men and may be better suited to United’s support than the Glazers, who have experienced many scandals during their reign. .

The Glazers, who completed the club’s takeover in 2005, have proved unpopular with supporters as the team’s on-field fortunes have declined in recent years.

Their purchase of United also left the club heavily in debt and they have long been accused of taking in more money than they used in transfer matters.

The Glazers further angered United fans by backing a failed European Super League project in April 2021 that would have seen the club join the breakaway competition.

A statement from United in November said that the board will “consider all strategic options, including new investments in the club, sales, or other transactions related to the company” .

United have not won the Premier League since 2013 and it was six years ago that they last won a major trophy.

After a dismal sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season, United have been revived by boss Erik ten Hag and sit fourth in the table after beating Manchester United City with a score of 2-1 on Saturday.

Ineos wants to expand its sports portfolio which already includes the ownership of the French team Nice and Swiss FC Lausanne-Sport, as well as the cycling team Ineos Grenadiers, formerly Team Sky.

Ratcliffe could face competition from Saudi Arabian investors after the country’s sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal said in November he “might” be interested in buying United and Liverpool , which is also for sale.

American investment firm Raine Group, which handled the sale of Chelsea, has privately advised United, which is valued at around £5 billion.
