JOHANNESBURG – The City of Johannesburg is preparing to launch a new system for its prepaid electricity system.

The one currently in use will stop issuing vouchers in November 2024.

This means that the system will not recognize brands purchased after this date.

Both the cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane have taken steps to upgrade prepaid electricity meters in the metro.

As part of the transition, the city said all customers will be transitioned to a prepaid system as part of a multi-year project.

“We faced challenges, especially lack of communication and public participation was very important,” said CoJ Infrastructure MMC, Michael Sun.

“For sure, we will publish a program where we will go to the area and explain to customers and residents what to do and answer their questions.”

The Sun said City Power officials are going to engage residents and ward councilors will lead the process.
